 Joseph and Perpetua Alfazema

They are the project founders and have worked tirelessly for the village of Kapasseni by singing, fundraising, speaking, and travelling back and forth to Kapasseni to coordinate projects. Joseph was born in Kapasseni and Perpetua was born in a nearby village. After almost 20 years in Canada, the family moved back to Mozambique in 2006, to continue serving the people of Sena, Kapasseni, and Caia. Pastor Joseph retired after 5 years of ministry and the Alfazemas moved to Edmonton,Alberta in Canada. Joseph mentors the student Pastors in Mozambique and Perpetua continues to run the Kuwangisana organization as the Executive Director. As of June 2015 she has been living in Sena, Mozambique again to begin new grant programs and work tirelessly to help the people. Pastor Joseph's health has improved enough so he was able to participate in the Graduation and Ordination of 8 Pastors for the newly formed Lutheran Church Concordia of Mozambique in Aug 2015. He has returned to live in Edmonton.

Who We Are

The work of the Kapasseni Project has been accomplished through a partnership between the Kapasseni Project Committee of Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Gettin' Higher Choir. Both groups have worked together with other volunteers and partners, with Pastor Joseph and Perpetua, Alfazema and with the Kapasseni Society (in Mozambique) to raise needed funds for the project and assist the people of Kapasseni to reduce absolute poverty conditions. The work is always done with the partnership and approval of the local community and chiefs. Near to Kapasseni, the areas of Sena and Caia are now also being assisted through the Kuwangisana Organization. The Caia Connection continues to assist with scholarships for secondary and post secondary education for Kapasseni school students. For more information go to www.caiaconnection.org

 The Gettin' Higher Choir

The Gettin' Higher Choir is a 300-member community choir in Victoria, directed by Shivon Robinsong and Denis Donnelly. Celebrating a belief that the joy of singing is everyone's birthright, the choir draws inspiration from many cultures, times, and spiritual paths. The choir has held annual fundraising concerts for Kapasseni since 1999. Special guests who have generously performed with the choir at those concerts include Valdy (2009), Susan Osborn (2008), Beth Nielsen Chapman (2007), Ann Mortifee (1999, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2016), Paul Horn (2006), Teresa Doyle (2004), Nelly Furtado (2002), and Virgo Rising (2001).

Choir members also help the Kapasseni Project in many other ways, including fundraising for specific areas of the work in Kapasseni, Sena, and Caia. Choir members now support the work being done through The Caia Connection.

The Kapasseni Project Committee in Canada

In 1998 Joseph and Perpetua Alfazema approached their congregation at Redeemer Lutheran Church and wanted to form a group to help Kapasseni. The Kapasseni Project was adopted as an official project and a committee was formed from volunteer members of Redeemer Lutheran Church. The committee also worked with interested individuals from the wider community, who participate as advisory members. The committee was Chair (Carol Kerr), Treasurer (Byron Biller), Secretary (Mona Achtzener), Financial Secretary (Sylvia Gledhill), other members (Dorothy Pearson, Howard Blair, Pastor Phillip Washeim) and advisory members Shivon Robinsong and Ian McLachlan. www.rlcvic.ca

The committee felt it had accomplished all of its original goals and was disolved in December 2015.
